![]() ![]() You may notice that sound actually does work in some instances, but not all. Tweak One: Snow Leopard should be up and running on your Hackintosh like a dream-with one exception: Sound isn't entirely working yet. Two Last TweaksYou could just stop there and be pretty happy at your new Hackintosh, but there are two little, easily performed tweaks you'll want to tackle to get everything in tip top shape: The first will get your sound fully working, and the second will allow you to boot into Snow Leopard without your thumb drive. When you reboot after the install completes, press the arrow keys at the graphical boot menu and select the drive you just installed Snow Leopard to. After you Apply the new partition, go back to the installer and install like normal to that drive. ![]() The quick version goes like this: Boot into the Snow Leopard installer, format the hard drive you want to install Snow Leopard to (go to Utilities -> Disk Utility, then click on the drive, select 1 Partition, Mac OS X Journaled ( Case-Sensitive Update: Several readers have suggested that case-sensitive formatting can cause problems with some applications, like Adobe's Creative Suite, so you may be better off sticking with plain old Mac OS X Journaled.), give it a name, and make sure GUID Partition Table is set in the Options. Since screenshots aren't really an option-and since it's a fairly easy process-my install instructions come in video format: Make sure you've set the boot priority in your BIOS to boot from your thumb drive (you can see how in this pic), then simply plug your prepared thumb drive into your Hackintosh and power it up. Now it's time to install Snow Leopard, which-unlike what we've done so far-is extremely easy. Step 3: Install Snow LeopardIf you've made it this far, the hard part is over. Just click through these images and make sure your BIOS settings match up. Rather than taking you step by step through every change you need to make, I've simply snapped a picture of the relevant BIOS screens and added some notes. Step 2: Set Your BIOSBefore you can boot into or install OS X on your Hackintosh, you've got to make some small adjustments to your system BIOS (press Delete at system startup to tweak your BIOS settings). Once you've finished there, you're ready to set your BIOS and install Snow Leopard. Note: Watch the video in HD and fullscreen to get a closer look at everything that's happening.Īs you can see in the video, after you restore the Snow Leopard install DVD to your thumb drive, all you've got to do is fire up the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard.pkg file (if you haven't already downloaded and unzipped it, you can grab it here), select your thumb drive, and, let the installer take care of all the dirty work that you previously had to do one line at a time in Terminal. ![]() That's when you're ready for the new and improved easy part.) (Come back when you get to the "Semi-heavy Terminal work" warning. If you want to read the very detailed version for a thorough explanation of how to rip the Snow Leopard install DVD to a disk image and then restore that image to your thumb drive, go here. I'm just going to include the step-by-step video below (made by the same generous man who created the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard installer package). ![]() Because in order to boot the installer, we need to customize the disk image with some special helper files of our own. Step One: Prepare Your Thumb Drive In this step, you're going to format your thumb drive and then restore the Snow Leopard DVD image to the thumb drive because later we'll be installing Snow Leopard to your hard drive using this thumb drive rather than the DVD. This package allows you to skip all the command line work in my last guide, and you can download it here. Another Mac to prepare your thumb drive.Note: If you feel like being completely honest, go ahead and buy the Mac Box Set-though, honestly, Apple's practically made it hard *not* to buy the fully functional install disc. You can use the $29 "Upgrade" disc to install, even though this is a fresh installation. Leave the meat in the digestive enzymes long enough and you’ll have a very tender cut of steak. By breaking down the proteins, you’re making the meat softer. Muscle, the main component of which is meat, is largely made of protein. The enzymes digest the proteins in the meat. Uses of proteolytic enzymes like bromelainīromelain and papain are used to tenderize meat. Sorry to all the wannabe spies out there! As your skin regenerates its outermost layer of skin, your fingerprints will return. Removing your dermal layer of skin would hurt, and yes, it would rid you of your fingerprints, temporarily. Since the dermal layer is the reason for a fingerprint, no dermal layer would equal no fingerprint. Logic suggested that bromelain would digest away the outermost, dermal layer of skin cells. Some alleged that workers who cut pineapple all day had lost their fingerprints. This digesting was thought to be so potent that, a few years ago, some dubious people on the Internet alleged that one could get rid of their fingerprints by rubbing their fingertips on a pineapple. Thankfully for us, the tissue in our mouth heals faster than the rest of the body, and saliva comes equipped with our body’s very own painkillers. Your tongue might feel like you’ve scrubbed it with sandpaper. If you eat too much pineapple in one sitting, your mouth will hurt. The bromelain is physically damaging your cells. The stinging, tingling pain that your tongue feels when you eat a pineapple is bromelain (and the pineapple’s acid) digesting your tongue. ![]() An enzyme that can break down protein will damage cells. That is a good question What bromelain does to you when you eat a pineappleĮvery time you eat a pineapple, it eats a little bit of you. It is a mixture of many proteolytic enzymes, which means that it can break down proteins in many different ways, making it more potent than many other proteolytic enzymes. In our case, stem bromelain is better at digesting proteins than the fruit bromelain.īromelain isn’t a single enzyme though. When proteins have different structures, their functions or ability to perform certain functions changes. Both versions of bromelain digest protein, but they have a slightly different structures. Pineapple has two types of bromelain-one in the stem and one in the flesh. Just like you might cut a beaded necklace using a pair of scissors, the pineapple has bromelain scissors to break down proteins. Just like beaded necklaces, which are made by joining a lot of individual beads together, proteins are made by joining many amino acids together. Bromelain makes it possible to chemically cut up proteins. However, what is a proteolytic enzyme? Simply put, a proteolytic enzyme is a molecule that can break down proteins.Īn enzyme is a molecule, usually a protein, that helps reactions in the body happen faster. To tell you the truth, I have never heard anyone use this word in Japan, but according to my go-to online dictionary it can also mean “ delicious” and “ appetizing” ( source). Nmai (んまい) is yet another colloquial variation of the word “ umai” and is best translated as “ yummy” or “ yum-yum“. You can also see this with the extremely useful words sugoi (凄い) and yabai (やばい), for example, which turn into “ sugee” and “ yabee“. In spoken Japanese, it is actually quite common to alter the last syllables of i-adjectives and to say “ ee” instead of “i”. So I only recommend you to use it among extremely close male friends. It sounds a bit sloppy and might even be considered rude. Umee (うめぇ, うめー, うめえ) is an even more casual version of the Japanese word “ umai” (うまい). It also explains the deeper meaning behind Rengoku‘s catchphrase in the anime “ Demon Slayer Mugen Train“. If you want to know more, here’s my post about the detailed meaning of the Japanese word “umai”. The word can also be used to say “ skilled“, “ promising“, or just “ good” in general. So, to all the female readers here: Don’t be hesitant about using “umai” (うまい) when you eat or drink something delicious with your friends! The only thing you have to keep in mind is that you should never use it in formal situations. ![]() Once, after I started saying it, too, they actually told me “Now you sound like a real Japanese”, haha. However, especially when hanging out with close friends or family, my female friends in Japan tend to use it all the time. Since it is a rather casual term “ umai” is more frequently used by men than women. It is usually written in hiragana as “ うまい” and I recommend you to do the same, but as you can see it can also be written in kanji as “ 美味い“, “ 旨い“, or “ 甘い“. Umai (うまい, 美味い, 旨い, 甘い) is the most common casual phrase that is used to say “ delicious” or “ tasty” in Japanese. If you want to learn more about the word “ oishii” check out my other blog post: “ Oishii: Japanese Meaning, English Translation, How to Use“. It’s really delicious! (polite but quite strong) It’s delicious, isn’t it? (polite and soft) In my opinion, it is okay to use “ oishii desu ne” (美味しいですね) in formal situations, especially when you are a woman, but I personally wouldn’t use “ oishii desu yo” (美味しいですよ). Just as with “oishii” you can also add the sentence-ending particles “ ne” and “ yo” after “ oishii desu” to add softness and/or emphasis. Explaining the real meaning of “desu” goes beyond this blog post, so just try to keep in mind that saying “ oishii desu” (美味しいです) will sound politer and more formal. In formal situations with coworkers or your boss, it is better to use the politer version and add the word “ desu” (です). It’s so delicious! (sounds pretty stronger) It’s delicious, isn’t it? (sounds softer) “ Ne” (ね) and “ yo” (よ) are sentence-ending particles and they add softness and/or emphasis. In anime and daily life, you will also often hear the expressions “ Oishii ne” (美味しいね) and “ Oishii yo!” (美味しいよ). Since in Japanese, it is common to omit parts of a sentence like for example the subject and the topic, just the word oishii (美味しい) by itself can also mean “ It’s delicious“, “ It’s tasty“, “ This is delicious“, or “ This is tasty“. However, the word is used so frequently that it actually rather means “ This tastes good” than “Oh my god! This is so delicious!”. Oishii (美味しい) means “ delicious” or “ tasty” and is the most commonly used word to express that something tastes good in Japanese. Further down below I will also cover how you can say “ so delicious“, “ very delicious“, and “ looks delicious” in Japanese. ![]() Read on if you want to know all of the 12 ways to say that something is delicious in Japanese and learn in detail when to use each of the expressions and words. Since most of them are dialects I want to focus on the 12 best and most common ways to say “ This is delicious” in Japanese. The core experience of sorting and rearranging is immensely satisfying You’ll only find this out after unpacking everything. As lazy as it is to leave your toothbrush by the telly, so you don’t need to get up, a red line will show around the item indicating that it is not in its proper place – be it the room or location. That becomes apparent in the subsequent levels as a floorplan becomes available as you’re now unpacking your life into bathrooms, dining rooms and more. There’s no correct space, but items do have a dedicated home to some extent. At first, it’s a bedroom where placing cuddly toys and books is a no-brainer. The task at hand is to unpack every box in the game, finding a home for each object. So, what’s the point of Unpacking? Far from deceiving, it’s in the title. It has a greater understanding of how to best organize memory in different situations, taking over from the kernel the management and allocation of virtual memory and object replacement. Varnish is closely aligned with modern hardware, allowing users to make more efficient use of higher memory densities. We’ve seen Varnish servers handle 300,000 req/sec, so it comes into its own when dealing with the traffic commonly experienced by websites today. One reason for this performance and efficiency boost is that Squid is a single process running on one CPU core, while Varnish is heavily threaded and each client connection is handled by a separate worker thread. After deploying Varnish Enterprise, RTÉ could reduce the number of servers in use while handling 10x more traffic, with significant improvements in both response time and availability. They ran a large network of Squid servers but could only serve around 800 req/sec per server before performance degraded. In a case study, RTÉ, the national broadcaster of Ireland, told us that Squid wouldn’t scale their website. Many of our content delivery and broadcasting partners have made similar transitions from Squid to Varnish Enterprise. The Varnish code was then open-sourced to share these benefits. Varnish handled the same traffic with 3 servers, simultaneously lowering average page loads from >150ms to under 30ms. The Varnish project began with the need to improve this hardware efficiency and performance while coping with high traffic. Verdens Gang, Norway's largest online newspaper, grew to over 45 million page views per week, requiring 12 Squid servers even as page loads remained unacceptably slow. ![]() Varnish’s origins relate to an issue with Squid regarding performance and stability: two critical topics for modern web applications with high levels of traffic. It is true that, as well as the reverse proxy use case, Squid’s philosophy is to support many use cases and protocols, and it has a good track record in this regard, as well as stability and security. That’s not to say that Squid is a poor reverse proxy, but the fact it wasn’t specifically designed for HTTP acceleration is something to keep in mind when thinking about performance and features. Squid is a forward proxy that can be configured as a reverse proxy, while Varnish is built specifically to be a reverse proxy and HTTP accelerator. Varnish and Squid have fundamentally different caching architectures. But how do they compare? Which one is right for your web service? Instead of presenting the player with bricks of expository text or lengthy dialogue sequences to page through, the game cleverly uses narrative voice-over to provide contextual color commentary about the on-screen action. That said, it was just the game's opening moments.Īnother neat presentational aspect that really adds a lot to Bastion is its use of dynamic narration to further the story. It'll be interesting to see how the combat evolves over time, because while there was a bit of variety that required the use of both ranged and melee attacks, the combat I experienced was easy enough that I didn't really feel compelled to use the shield that I had obtained. Moment to moment gameplay is solid (albeit familiar) hack-and-slash, though due to the Kid's tools of choice, is more aptly described as "shoot-and-smash." There were a variety of enemy types present even in the short snippet I played, and many pieces of special loot could be collected to upgrade the Kid's arsenal of weapons in different ways.
